Deck Takeoff Master Review

Disclosure: EBN Tools built and sells this app. This is our own walkthrough of how it works, not an independent review.

A deck calculator review for the board and joist count you take to the yard tomorrow — not a 3D design toy.

You ordered decking by square footage. The gap was wrong. The last row needed a rip you never bought. Someone drove back for six more sixteen-foot boards while the joists sat bare. That is the short-count tax every deck charges when the takeoff was a napkin.

Verdict

This is the deck calculator you use on the job tomorrow, not theory. Not a permit-drawing suite. Punch length, width, actual board width, gap, stock length, and joist spacing — then read board rows, boards to buy, joists, and a material list on your phone.

Free does one rectangle. Pro is $9.99 a month for extra zones, stairs or a landing, waste as dollars, and a shareable quote letterhead. Worth $9.99 if the week has more than one shape or you need a list you can send from the truck. After the first board count, the next app in the suite was already open: Stair Stringer Master for the steps off the same deck.

What a deck calculator app actually has to do

Most “best deck calculator” pages stop at square feet. Ordering needs rows across the width, stock lengths that match the run, joist spacing along the length, and a waste percent that survives a bad board. A review that matters has to survive dirty thumbs and a lumber ticket you can read without translating a formula.

Deck Takeoff Master is a phone-first PWA. Add it to the Home Screen. English UI. Feet/inches or metres/millimetres. Offline after the first load. No login. Data stays on the device. You enter deck length and width, actual board face width (not the nominal “6-inch” name), side gap, stock board length, joist spacing, and waste. You get board rows, boards to buy, joist count, and a deck material list you can act on.

The board math is the same count we already published: rows = ceil(width ÷ (board width + gap)), then linear feet × waste, then divide by stock length and round up. A 12×16 with 5½″ boards and a ⅛″ gap is about 26 rows — buy roughly 29 sixteen-foot boards with 10% waste. If you want the chart on paper, use How Many Deck Boards Do I Need? The app is that count plus joists and the shapes Free does not cover.

The real test is the job the next morning. That is the only review that matters. If the number only works at a desk, it is homework. If it works in the truck before you load the trailer, it is a takeoff.

Free vs Pro — no mystery

Free is enough for one straight rectangle and a clean board/joist list. Pro is for a wrap with a second zone the same morning, stairs off the deck, waste priced so the homeowner sees the buffer, or a letterhead list you can share from the phone. That is the $9.99 line.

There is no full FSM client portal here. Deck Takeoff Master Pro is about more shapes and a sendable material quote, not scheduling or invoices. If you need a branded fence PDF at contractor pricing, that is Fence Quote Pro on the hub — a different product.

The mistake everyone makes

Using nominal board width. A “2×6” face is closer to 5½″; counting rows with 6″ under-orders by a full board or more on a wide deck. The second mistake is skipping the gap. Composite often wants a wider side gap than wet pressure-treated laid tight. The third is buying net linear feet with no waste; a cupped board or a wrong rip turns into another yard run while the joists wait.

Deck Takeoff Master wants actual face width and a gap you set. Default waste starts around 10% for a straight rectangle — raise it for diagonal layouts, picture-frame borders, or picky face selection. You still own the product spec and the joist rating for your decking. Measure the face. Confirm the manufacturer gap. A spare board beats a short last row.

What it is not

Estimate only — not engineering or building-code advice. It will not stamp a drawing, check joist spans against your local table, size beams, or replace a licensed designer on a complex deck. It is not RedX-style 3D permit software and not a full cost estimator with labor rates.

No client portal, inventory sync, or invoice. One English UI. Price in USD. Markets: USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada. No AI. Math stays on-device.

Is $9.99 worth it?

If you build one simple rectangle a month and Free covers the board and joist list, Free is the product. Punch the size. Read the rows. Buy the stock.

If the week stacks a second zone, needs stairs or a landing on the same takeoff, or you want letterhead you can share before you leave the yard, Pro is the product. One short decking run and a second lumber trip cost more than a month of Pro. Worth $9.99 on that week. Not worth pretending it replaces a stamped framing plan. No fake star widget. No invented “customers say.” The test is whether the numbers hold on the job the next morning. Then Stair Stringer Master is one tap away for the steps, and Concrete Mix Master is next for the pier tubes under the posts.

The series

Deck Takeoff Master is one app in EBN Build Calculators. After the boards, the next number is usually stringers — or concrete for the posts. Same idea: phone-first, offline, estimate only. See the deck board chart and the Stair Stringer Master review when the same morning needs rise and run.

Bottom line

Deck Takeoff Master is a deck calculator you can use at the yard tomorrow. Not a textbook. Not structural software. Free for one rectangle with boards, joists, and a material list. Pro for extra zones, stairs or landing, waste as dollars, and quote letterhead at $9.99 a month. Punch the size. Take the count to the yard. Open the next app in the series when the same deck needs stringers or pier concrete.
