A 12 ft wall at 16 inches on center needs 10 studs for the common layout — not 9. At 24 in OC the same wall is 7 studs. That is the field count only: start stud, end stud, and the OC marks between them.
The short count happens on the tape. You divide 12 by 1.33 and load nine 2×4s. The last corner still needs a stick. The drywall crew waits while someone runs back to the yard for more lumber.
The stud-count formula is:
studs = (wall length in inches ÷ OC spacing) + 1
Round up when the division is not whole. Never skip the +1. Add king/jack studs for every door and window, corner assemblies, then about 10% waste. Estimate only — not engineering or building-code advice.

How many studs for a 12-foot wall?
Convert feet to inches. A 12 ft wall is 144 in. At 16 in OC: 144 ÷ 16 = 9, then add one for the far end → 10 studs. Positions land at 0, 16, 32, 48, 64, 80, 96, 112, 128, and 144 in.
At 24 in OC: 144 ÷ 24 = 6, plus one → 7 studs. Sixteen-inch spacing is the residential default for load-bearing and most interior walls because 4 ft drywall breaks on studs. Twenty-four-inch OC saves lumber on many non-bearing partitions when sheathing and code allow it.
A quick rule of thumb for 16 in OC: multiply wall length in feet by 0.75 and add 1. Twelve × 0.75 + 1 = 10. Ten feet gives 8.5 → round up to 9. That matches the chart.
The formula, on a tape
Measure the wall plate length in feet. Pick OC spacing (16 or 24 in for most wood framing; 19.2 in shows up on some engineered layouts). Then:
- Length (in) = feet × 12
- Studs = (length ÷ spacing) + 1 — round up
- Add openings and corners before you order
The division counts the spaces between studs. The +1 puts a stud on both ends. Drop the +1 and the far corner has no vertical. The wall looks fine until you hang the last sheet of drywall and find nothing to screw into.

Three mistakes that short the lumber list
Forgetting the +1. Dividing length by spacing gives spaces, not studs. A 12 ft wall at 16 in is nine spaces and ten sticks. Order nine and you are one short at the end plate every time.
Counting field studs only when the wall has a door or window. Each opening usually needs two king studs (full height) and two jack (trimmer) studs under the header — often four extra pieces before cripples. A simple 20 ft wall with one door and two windows can need ten to twelve more studs than the chart. Order to the chart alone and framing day ends at the big-box store.
Ordering net count with no waste. Warped studs, wrong cuts, and crown that refuses to work eat 5–15%. A 10-stud wall ordered as exactly ten leaves you one bad stick from a second run while the plates are already nailed. Buy the allowance. Leftover lumber is cheaper than a cold crew waiting on wood.
Doors, windows, and corners
After the field count, add the specialty pieces:
- Door: typically 2 king + 2 jack (plus cripples above the header)
- Window: 2 king + 2 jack, plus cripples above the header and below the sill
- Corner: often a 2- or 3-stud assembly for drywall backing (advanced framing can reduce this)
Plates are a separate takeoff: bottom plate, top plate, and usually a double top plate — linear feet of 2×, not stud count. Headers sized to the opening and load come from the plan or span tables, not this chart.
A worked example: 20 ft wall, 16 in OC, one door, two windows, two corners. Field studs ≈ 16. Door ≈ +4 specialty (before cripples). Each window ≈ +4. Corners ≈ +2 to +3 each depending on method. You are already past 30 sticks before waste — far from the “16” on the simple chart.
16 in vs 24 in on center
Sixteen-inch OC is the durable residential default: stronger wall, easier drywall layout, what most carpenters expect. Twenty-four-inch OC cuts stud count by roughly a third and is common on non-bearing interiors and some exterior walls with the right sheathing. Local code, load path, and the stamped drawing win over a blog chart.
Stud length is not the same as stud count. An 8 ft ceiling often uses 92-5/8 in precuts; a 9 ft wall needs longer stock. Count pieces first, then match the precut or cut list in Framing Takeoff Master.
