Framing Takeoff Master Review

Disclosure: EBN Tools built and sells this app. This is our own walkthrough of how it works, not an independent review.

A framing calculator review for the stud count you take to the lumber yard — not a structural design suite.

You ordered 2×4s from wall length ÷ 16 inches. You forgot the end studs. The last corner needed four more sticks while the crew waited on the truck. That is the short-count tax every partition charges when the takeoff was a napkin.

Verdict

This is the stud calculator you use on the job tomorrow, not theory. Not a full estimating suite. Punch wall length, height, spacing, and waste — then read stud count, plate linear, and header stock on your phone.

Free does one wall. Pro is $9.99 a month for up to 12 walls, king/jack opening estimates, waste as dollars, and a printable cut list. Worth $9.99 if the week has more than one wall or you need a list you can print from the truck. After the first stud count, the next app in the suite was already open: Sheet Takeoff Master for the drywall on those same walls.

What a wall stud count calculator actually has to do

Most “how many 2x4s” pages stop at length ÷ 16. Ordering needs both end studs counted, a waste percent that survives cutoffs and bad boards, plate linear for bottom and top (plus an optional double top plate), and a header stock estimate when doors and windows eat the run. A review that matters has to survive dirty thumbs and a yard ticket you can read without translating a formula.

Framing Takeoff Master is a phone-first PWA. Add it to the Home Screen. English UI. Feet/inches or metres/millimetres. Offline after the first load. No login. Data stays on the device. You enter one wall, set spacing (16 or 24 in OC in the US/CA; 400/600 mm UK; 450/600 mm AU/NZ), pick stud size as a count label, toggle double top plate and corner extras, and read studs plus plates.

The stud math is the same count we already published: ceil(length ÷ spacing) + 1, including both ends. A 12 ft wall at 16 in OC is 10 studs, not 9. If you want the chart on paper, use How Many Studs Do I Need? The app is that count plus plates, header stock, and the multi-wall shapes Free does not cover.

The real test is the job the next morning. That is the only review that matters. If the number only works at a desk, it is homework. If it works in the truck before you load the trailer, it is a takeoff.

Free vs Pro — no mystery

Free is enough for one straight wall and a clean stud-and-plate list. Pro is for a second wall the same morning, door/window king-jack pads on the same takeoff, waste priced so the client sees the buffer, or a printable list you can share from the phone. That is the $9.99 line.

There is no full FSM client portal here. Framing Takeoff Master Pro is about more walls and a sendable cut list, not scheduling or invoices. If you need a branded fence PDF at contractor pricing, that is Fence Quote Pro on the hub — a different product.

The mistake everyone makes

Dividing length by spacing and stopping. A 12 ft wall at 16 in OC is not 9 studs — you need both ends, so 10. The second mistake is zero waste — cutoffs, crowns, and bad boards eat stock. About 10% is the common pad for a simple run. The third is treating stud size as engineering: the app labels 2×4 / 2×6 (or regional equivalents) for counting only — it does not size members for load.

Framing Takeoff Master wants length, height, spacing, and waste you set. Default waste starts around 10% — raise it for messy stock or lots of openings. You still own the code check, fire blocking, and structural layout for your job. Measure the wall. Confirm the stud length your yard stocks. A spare stick beats a short last corner.

What it is not

Estimate only — not engineering or building-code advice. It will not stamp a drawing, check shear walls, size headers for load, or replace a licensed designer on a commercial frame. It is not a full bid system with labor rates, fastener schedules, or client proposal PDFs.

No client portal, inventory sync, or invoice. One English UI. Price in USD. Markets: USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada. No AI. Math stays on-device.

Is $9.99 worth it?

If you frame one simple wall a month and Free covers the stud and plate list, Free is the product. Punch the length. Read the count. Buy the stock.

If the week stacks a second wall, needs king/jack pads for doors and windows, or you want a printable list before you leave the yard, Pro is the product. One short framing run and a second supply trip cost more than a month of Pro. Worth $9.99 on that week. Not worth pretending it replaces a stamped commercial takeoff. No fake star widget. No invented “customers say.” The test is whether the numbers hold on the job the next morning. Then Sheet Takeoff Master is one tap away for the drywall on those walls, and Fence Takeoff Master is next for the yard line outside.

The series

Framing Takeoff Master is one app in EBN Build Calculators. After the studs, the next number is usually drywall sheets — or fence posts for the yard. Same idea: phone-first, offline, estimate only. See the stud count chart and the drywall sheet guide when the same morning needs the finish on those walls.

Bottom line

Framing Takeoff Master is a stud calculator you can use at the yard tomorrow. Not a textbook. Not a bid suite. Free for one wall with spacing, waste, studs, plates, and header stock. Pro for extra walls (up to 12), king/jack openings, waste as dollars, and a printable cut list at $9.99 a month. Punch the length. Take the count to the yard. Open the next app in the series when the same job needs drywall or fence posts.
